Could this be skin cancer?

i've had this mole for as long as i can remember. it's right above my right knee and has always been tanned around evenly. but this summer, when i started tanning, my whole leg got tan except around the mole, so it's the mole, then a white circle around it, then tan-ness. what could this be? it's embarrassing
